Sgt. Mike Cerruti, Father Wetzel, and St. Michael the Archangel Ministry Program

Over 15 years ago, Sgt. Mike Cerruti was working the night shift in the 15th District. One of his calls brought him to St. Joachim’s Church in Lower Frankford, where he struck up a conversation with the church’s pastor, Father Steven Wetzel. Over a cup of coffee, Father Wetzel expressed a deep interest in the officers who served the community. That first conversation sparked a connection that would grow into something far greater.

As time went on, Sgt. Cerruti and other officers found themselves returning to St. Joachim’s to speak with Father Wetzel between calls. Those informal conversations laid the foundation for what would eventually become the St. Michael the Archangel Ministry Program—a multi-denominational ministry designed to support Philadelphia police officers and their families.

What began as a chance encounter evolved into a full-time ministry presence at FOP Lodge 5, led by “Father Steve,” as he came to be known affectionately among officers. Father Steve was a steady presence during life’s highs and lows—celebrating joys, offering comfort in grief, and standing by our members in times of tragedy. His sudden passing in 2022 was a profound loss to our community.

Still, the work continues.

Under Sgt. Cerruti’s leadership and with the support of the Ministry Board, the program remains active and vital. Just this week, the program is hosting a blood drive at FOP Lodge 5 (today), followed by the Monthly Mass of Remembrance on Wednesday evening at St. Matthew’s Church. A 36-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, Sgt. Mike Cerruti has served as a Squad Director for over 25 years and has worked the night shift for more than two decades.

Off duty, he has remained deeply committed to officer well-being through his continued work with the Ministry Program. He also testified at this year’s contract hearings on Officer Wellness and Trauma and is currently a candidate for Trustee in the upcoming FOP election.
